Embracing the Past to Educate the Future

At the Gaffos Museum of Dental History, our approach involves combining historical artifacts with engaging narratives, allowing visitors to appreciate the evolution of dental science. We strive to foster a deeper understanding of dentistry’s journey through time.

Our Mission

Our mission is to educate the public about the history and evolution of dentistry through engaging displays and informative programs, fostering appreciation and understanding of dental practices and their significance in healthcare.

Our Values

Growing up, Dr. Gaffos was an avid Boy Scout and was just 2 merit badges away from earning the distinction of Eagle Scout. This journey instilled in him the desire to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. These are principles that an Eagle Scout is expected to embody in their character, which form the foundation for leadership and responsible citizenship.

A lifechanging Mentor…

Dr. Gaffos’s mentor, Dr. Neill Macaulay, was an avid collector of dental antiques and he helped direct SC students into the field of Dentistry (via out of state schools) before there was even a dental school in South Carolina. He helped facilitate Dr. Gaffos applying to Dental School at the University of Alabama, and he was instrumental in guiding Dr. Gaffos into the field of Dentistry where he has had a long, rewarding and fulfilling career. Practicing dentistry nearly 60 years, at 82, Dr. Gaffos has just recently retired and is still beloved by his patients.
Dr. Gaffos was inspired by Dr. Macaulay and proceeded to amass his own extensive collection of Dental Antiques. In honor of his mentor, Dr. Gaffos was instrumental in the fundraising, renovation and rededication of the Macaulay Museum of Dental History at MUSC.  https://youtu.be/HdasNx7JD2g This is Dr. Gaffos in a recorded message welcoming visitors to the Macaulay Museum of Dental History in Charleston. After decades of collecting dental antiques and artifacts, Dr. Gaffos finally opened a museum of his own.
